Massage Therapy

At Bluesky Physiotherapy Clinic in North Vancouver, Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) are licensed healthcare practitioners committed to restoring and maintaining the pain-free function of your body.

Treatment by a Registered Massage Therapist is typically covered under most extended health care plans.

Our Registered Massage Therapists take the time to talk to you about your health history and current physical condition before deciding on a course of treatment. We’re here to help you achieve your health goals, so you can live your life to its fullest.

Massage therapy is a one-on-one, hands-on approach to healthcare. Regular massage therapy can assist in relieving stress, pain, and muscle tension associated with various musculoskeletal or neurological conditions, including:

Stress is a part of everyday life, and massage therapy offers relief by manipulating the body’s soft tissues.

Masseuses use their fingers, fists, and feet to apply long, smooth strokes and kneading movements, improving blood circulation in the muscles.

This process brings in fresh nutrients, releases accumulated toxins, and strengthens muscles.

Massage treatment can warm up your muscles and improve joint movement, relax tense muscles, and stimulate the flow of blood, nutrients to the skin, underlying tissues, and lymph drainage.

Pain increases over time if left untreated. Neck, shoulder, back, and lower back pain can all be treated with a variety of pain-release techniques. Expert masseuses recognize differences in firmness and tightness at different places in the muscles and adjust pressure accordingly to loosen the tension spots.

Many people use prescription drugs, painkillers, heating pads, ice packs, and herbs to alleviate headaches such as tension headaches, sinus headaches, and migraines. Deep tissue massage treatment can relieve and prevent migraines and headaches without the need for dangerous drugs. Increased tension can make you incapable of thinking clearly.

After a soothing and revitalizing massage session, delivered in tranquil surroundings — with soft lights, soothing music, and pleasant aromas of massage oils — administered by an expert masseuse, your mind is cleared of exaggerated anxiety, making you capable of thinking with clarity. When you are physically and mentally relaxed, you can take a more balanced and fresh perspective on your life situation.

Tui-Nai Massage

Tui Na is an oriental bodywork therapy that has been used in China for more than two thousand years.

Tui Na utilizes the traditional Chinese medical theory of the flow of Qi through the meridians as its basic therapeutic orientation.

Through the application of massage and manipulation techniques, Tui Na seeks to establish a more harmonious flow of Qi through the system of channels and collaterals, allowing the body to naturally heal itself.

FAQ

What is a massage therapy treatment plan at Blue Sky Clinic?

Your registered massage therapist takes the time to make sure that their treatment is tailored to meet your personal health goals.

During your initial interview, your massage therapist will ask you questions about your current and past health history, activities, and work demands to develop an effective treatment plan. Good communication is an important part of this process. You can ask administration to any help.

After the initial interview, your massage therapist will instruct you on how to position yourself on the table, and then will leave the room to provide you with privacy to get undressed to a level with which you are comfortable. Each room at our clinic, is fully private, with ergonomically-designed padded, comfortable tables, and is prepared with fresh linens prior to your arrival. Once you are positioned comfortably under the sheets, your massage therapist will re-enter the room.

During the session, your massage therapist will maintain an open dialogue with you to ensure that. you are comfortable throughout the session and the treatment provided meets your needs. As a part of your session, your massage therapist may also include instructions on exercises or stretches to perform at home to maximize the treatment’s effectiveness.

For your initial appointment, we recommend 60 minutes to allow for adequate treatment time.

Should I wear my custom orthotics all the time?

The longer you wear your custom orthotics the more benefit you will get out of them. If your daily activities vary to the extent that you change your footwear, then you should have a second pair of custom orthotics designed for that specific activity. (I.e. going to the gym after work)

What should I expect afterward?

After your session, you will likely feel a sense of relaxation and relief, and a decrease in muscle tension/aches. In some cases, you may temporarily feel a mild sense of fatigue. Others report feeling energized. Your massage therapist may recommend follow-up home care like fluids, heat or cold, or stretches/exercises to maximize the treatment effect. If you are still feeling pain or discomfort, it is important to stick to the treatment plan your massage therapist recommended as sometimes more than one treatment is necessary for a desired result.

Is it safe to combine massage therapy with other types of treatments?

Massage therapy can be an effective complement to different therapies (e.g. physiotherapy, chiropractic, active rehabilitation), and can enhance or extend the therapeutic effects of other treatments. However, in some cases it may be more appropriate to have certain types of treatment sessions precede others (e.g. massage therapy prior to chiropractic treatment, or active rehabilitation prior to massage therapy).

I’m pregnant. How can massage therapy benefit me?

Massage is a wonderful way to relax, relieve pain and discomfort, and help you cope with stress and fatigue during pregnancy. During pregnancy, your body undergoes several changes, including weight gain and postural shifts. This results in extra pressure on your joints and more strain on your muscles. Massage helps relieve muscle and joint discomfort associated with these changes. Massage therapy is also a natural therapeutic option for the management of certain chronic conditions and prevention of illness. Regularly scheduled massage treatments are particularly essential since many medications that are considered relatively safe to control symptoms and discomfort (such as pain killers, anti-inflammatories, laxatives, sleeping pills) are not recommended (or desirable) to take during pregnancy. Talk with your therapist to determine what treatment plan is appropriate for you.

Are there any situations in which massage therapy would not be appropriate for me?

Yes. That’s why it’s imperative that you complete your health history questionnaire in detail and go through an assessment with your massage therapist prior to treatment. It is very important that you inform your massage therapist of any health problems you have had or are currently dealing with, or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor’s care, it may help the massage therapist to have a referral from your doctor to describe your medical condition or recommend care. This way, your massage therapist will be able to work with your doctor to treat you more effectively.
