Traditional Chinese medical theory is based upon the concept that there is an energy, which runs through certain pathways or meridians throughout the human body. The energy flowing through these pathways can become blocked or obstructed due to emotional stress, unhealthy lifestyle choices, harmful environmental factors, poor diet, or physical injuries. When this energy becomes blocked, the result is pain, discomfort, or disease. The goal of varies treatment therapies is to clear obstructions, allowing the energy to flow freely and returning the patient to the state of balance.

At Blue Sky Acupuncture Clinic we offer Ear acupuncture, also known as auricular therapy. Auricular therapy is widely used for many conditions, including addiction treatment, mood disorders, obesity, pain, and other conditions. This medical system emphasizes a holistic approach to medicine, an approach that treats the whole person. The acupuncture points found on the ear help to regulate the body’s internal organs, structures, and functions.
Auricular therapy has a long history of use in China. It was mentioned in the most famous of ancient Chinese medical textbooks, “The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine.” In modern times, auricular therapy has been shown to stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s own feel-good chemicals.
Dr. Nogier’s research indicated that there are over 100 or so separate acupuncture points on the external ear and that when these points are stimulated they are believed to influence the various organs and systems in the body. Nogier discovered that the position of the ear points and zones were approximately in the position of an upside down foetus, super-imposed on the external ear, with the head located around the lobe of the ear. His research also indicated that every part of the body has its own representative acupuncture point on the external ear, and that stimulation one of these points can influence the corresponding organ linked to that particular ear point.
Computerized Body Scan
Blue Sky Registered Acupuncturists uses the AcuGraph Digital Meridian Imaging system as part of an integrated approach to your healthcare.
The AcuGraph Digital Meridian Imaging system is a computerized tool used to analyze and document the energetic status of the acupuncture meridians. Your healthcare practitioner will use the system in a short examination by touching a moistened probe to acupuncture points on your hands and feet.
Acupuncture meridians are invisible energy pathways in your body that have been used therapeutically for over 500 years. These meridians conduct life-force energy, or Qi (pronounced “chee”) in and around all the parts of your body. Blockage or interference in these meridian pathways can result in energetic imbalances that may contribute to negative health conditions. The primary goal of acupuncture treatment is to restore energetic balance and proper energy flow to these meridians, thus allowing your body to function normally and return to health naturally.
The AcuGraph system allows your practitioner to measure and analyze the energy balance of each acupuncture meridian. Armed with this information, your healthcare practitioner can make better-informed decisions about your condition, and provide the best treatment possible.
Within the P.I.E. (Personal Integrated Energetics) chart, each wedge of the circle represents one meridian pathway. Those shown in green are balanced and functioning properly. Colors that do not extend to the edge of the circle identify and classify your meridian energy imbalances.
Your P.I.E. score includes a complete analysis of all your meridian pathways and reflects the overall health of your meridian energy system. A perfect score of 100 reflects complete balance and unimpeded flow of your Qi energy. A lower score means there are various imbalances that you and your healthcare practitioner should address together.
What’s the difference between acupressure and acupuncture?
Acupressure and acupuncture are actually quite alike. In fact, acupressure is sometimes referred to as “needleless acupuncture,” because both forms of healing use the same points to achieve the desired results. The main difference between the professions is that an acupuncturist stimulates points by inserting needles, whereas an Acupressurist stimulates the same points using finger pressure.
How does acupressure work?
Like Acupuncture, acupressure involves the stimulation of certain points on the body. Stimulating these points can trigger the release of endorphins, chemicals produced by the body that relieve pain. When endorphins are released, the pain is blocked, and the flow of blood and oxygen to the affected area is increased. This causes the muscles to relax and promotes healing.
In acupressure, as with most traditional Chinese medicine concepts, local symptoms are considered an expression of the whole body’s condition. A person with a tension headache, for instance, may actually be suffering from pain or stress in the shoulder and neck. An Acupressurist would focus not only on relieving pain and discomfort, but removing the source of that pain and discomfort, before it develops into a more serious condition.
Besides relieving pain, acupressure can help rebalance the body by lowering stress and tension levels and strengthening the immune system. Certain Acupressure points can also relieve tension in the chest, enabling people to breathe more deeply and sleep better, and there has been anecdotal evidence that acupressure can help pregnant women have a quicker, less painful delivery.
Advantages and Limits of Acupressure
Acupressure has several advantages over most other forms of healing:
- It is extremely cost-effective. No special equipment is required; the only items a person needs to perform acupressure effectively are their own fingers and/or toes.
- It can be performed anywhere, at any time. A person doesn’t need to practice in a particular setting or a particular time of the day to experience its effects.
- It can be performed alone. Self-acupressure has been performed in Asia for thousands of years. In the United States, many people can learn acupressure from an experienced practitioner or health care provider. In addition, there are a wide range of books and videotapes on the subject so that people can learn how to self-perform acupressure in the comfort of their own homes.
- It is very safe, as long as a person follows the instructions provided by a licensed health care professional. No drugs are involved with acupressure; hence, there is no opportunity for drug-related side effects to occur.
- It offers a great deal of benefits to the patient. Correctly performed, acupressure increases circulation, reduces tension and enables the body to relax. Reducing tension, in turn, strengthens the immune system and promotes wellness.
However, acupressure is not without its limits. Applying acupressure too abruptly, or using too much force during treatment, can lead to bruising and discomfort. Great care should be used when applying pressure to points on or near the abdomen, groin, armpits, or throat. Pregnant women or those with recently formed scars, burns, infections or skin lesions should also take special care. At Blue Sky Acupuncture Clinic Patients can consult with a licensed health care professional before using acupressure or any other form of health care.
